About Rainforest Research

Established in 1985 by the UK’s Royal Society and headquartered at the then newly opened Danum Valley Field Centre in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, the SE Asia Rainforest Research Partnership (SEARRP) supports, manages and facilitates world-class science in the rainforests of Sabah. The Royal Society directly funded SEARRP for 30 years – the longest period of support it has ever provided for an overseas programme in its 360-year history. In 2015 we re-launched SEARRP as a joint UK-Malaysia programme comprising a UK-registered charity with a Board of Trustees hosted by the Royal Society.

Over the past three decades SEARRP science has explored and elucidated many of the key questions relating to the ecology, conservation and restoration of Malaysia’s forests, often within the overarching context of land-use and climate change. The findings of our research programme have enabled a step-change in our understanding of tropical rainforests, the impacts of logging, fragmentation and conversion to agriculture across a range of parameters and, as importantly, how these impacts can be mitigated and reversed.

In recent years, SEARRP has led several facilitating roles in capacity building, training and environmental education (EE) programmes with organisations, conservation practitionersm EE implementers, students and local communities.
